THE BIDDING BOX - STANDARD AMERICAN
Stayman

Over partner's 1NT bid, you have the following cards:

Kxxx ~~~ Kxx ~~~ Qxx ~~~ Qxx

Stayman is the perfect bid for finding an eight-card fit when your partner has opened 1NT. Your hand contains at least 8 points and at least one four-card major. You bid 2C, artificial and forcing, asking partner if he has a four-card major. If partner has a four-card major, he will bid 2H with four hearts in his hand, or 2 spades with four spades. If partner has four cards in both majors, he will bid 2H. Bidding 2S by the 1NT opener denies having four hearts. If you find a fit with partner, bid to the appropriate level in the major suit fit. Lacking a four-card major, partner will bid 2D. You will now place the contract. With 8 or 9 points, your bid will be 2NT. Holding 10 to 12 points, you bid 3NT.
